In this Q&A, our Associate Solicitor Fiona Thompson-Butler reflects on her route into the profession, how her role has developed over the years and shares the advice she would give to those starting their legal career.
Fiona is an Associate Commercial Property Solicitor with 12 years’ experience in acquisitions, leases and finance. Friendly and approachable, she enjoys building strong relationships with clients and supporting them through their commercial property transactions.
What first attracted you to a career in property law?
“It wasn’t a conscious decision, but something I fell into years ago and really enjoyed.”
How long have you been at Landsmiths, and how has your role evolved since joining?
“I have worked with Rachael and Vik for 12 years now. I originally started out as their legal assistant and worked my way up through qualification.”
What achievement are you most proud of so far?
“My biggest achievement is qualifying as a solicitor, but I am also really proud of the business we have all built at Landsmiths. Our culture is second to none and the calibre of clients and deals we work on is incredible, particularly given the size of the firm.”
What advice would you give to someone starting their legal career?
“Be a sponge, ask questions and soak up as much information as you possibly can. Use your initiative and give things a go… you only learn from doing.”
From starting out as a legal assistant to qualifying as a solicitor, Fiona’s career has developed alongside the Landsmiths team. Her journey is a great example of the value of learning through experience and taking opportunities to develop.
Today, she brings that experience and approachable style to her work with our commercial property clients and continues to play an important part in the Landsmiths team.
